The Benefits of Powder Coating Outdoor Funiture

Powder coating is an excellent solution for protecting and enhancing the appearance of outdoor metal furniture. It provides a durable, weather-resistant, and UV-resistant finish that can withstand harsh outdoor conditions. Powder coating furniture with different colors, gloss, not only makes it colorful, but extends its lifespan.

Powder coated products are more rust-resistant, scratch-proof, environmental than wet painted products, thus more and more people choose powder coating for outdoor furniture.

What Kind of Outdoor Furniture Suggested to be Powder Coated

All kinds of metal structured furniture can be powder coated, as the powder coating is based on electrostatic charging theory. Metal Furnitures at Patio, Lawn & Garden are needed to be powder coated, such as chairs, dining tables, railings, frames, whether in steel or alumininum materials.

How to Apply Powder Coating on Outdoor Metal Furniture

Step 1 - Preparation

For the powder coating process to begin, the furniture must be thoroughly prepped. The surface must be thoroughly cleaned and pre-treated to make sure the power adheres to the furniture properly. This can usually happen by sandblasting or chemical treatment.

a. Clean the Metal Surface

  • Remove dirt, grease, and rust: Use a degreaser to clean the surface, and sandblast or chemically treat the metal to remove rust, old paint, or coatings.

  • Rinse and dry: After cleaning, rinse the metal with water and let it dry completely.

b. Sand or Abrade the Surface

  • Lightly sand the metal to create a rough surface for better powder adhesion.

  • Use sandpaper (120-180 grit) or an abrasive blaster.

c. Apply a Pre-Treatment (Optional)

  • For outdoor furniture, consider applying a phosphate or chromate conversion coating to improve corrosion resistance and powder adhesion.

Step 2 - Powder Spraying

The next step in the powder coating process is to create the powder that will be coating the furniture. The powder is electrostatically charged by an electrostatic coating machine. Charging the coating powder causes the powder to behave like a magnet to the object being coated, wrapping around the furniture to create a uniform and thick layer.

The Equipment & Supplies for Powder Spraying

  • Powder Coating Powders: Choose a powder specifically designed for outdoor use, as it will have UV resistance and durability.

  • Powder Coating Gun: Use a professional powder coating gun, which charges the powder particles electrostatically.

  • Powder Coating Booth: The powder spraying must be performed in a booth chamber, in order to collect overspray and recycle it, moreover create a dustless workshop.

Step 3 - Powder Curing

After the piece of furniture has been covered with electrostatic powder, it is placed into a powder curing oven. The furniture is then baked at a carefully controlled temperature, causing the powder particles to melt and fuse into a fluid, film-like coat. The curing process delivers a durable, resistant coat that minimizes chipping, fading, and wearing.

Once the curing process is complete you are left with a completely new piece of art, beautifully coated in a strong, vibrant , and long-lasting coat, ready to be used for many seasons to come.
